AMAZON
As fishermen, we are always looking for that new thrill, the extra angle which provides superlative sport in a destination as yet undiscovered by any but the most adventurous amongst us. To find such a Mecca, and to find good facilities and service, together with easy travel connections is quite a challenge. However, occasionally one can strike lucky and open a new area where the fish fight hard, are plentiful and come in all shapes and sizes. Brazil offers this opportunity. The Amazon basin is vast beyond comprehension; a world where new species of plant and animal are still being discovered every year, a primordial rainforest that appears unchanged over countless millennia. Within its hidden depths lie all manner of creatures and birds; colourful, noisy and oddly shaped. And of course, there are fish. The lifeblood of the basin is in the arterial waters of numerous rivers, flowing from the colander of the rainforest basin into the main river and out to the sea. These rivers are replete with a diverse range of aquatic life; from catfish of over 200lbs to the kind of fish one finds in a tropical aquarium, all are here, hunter and hunted. This wide variety provides sport like no other in an environment like no other.
In the southern part of the Amazon on the Sao Benedito River lies Thaimacu Falls Lodge. Specifically built for fishermen, the lodge provides access to some of the richest fishing available. The Peacock Bass, with its distinctivly colourful markings, offers what is potentially the best pound for pound fight of any freshwater species. With highly aggressive takes and short diving runs, sight fishing for these fish as they patrol the shores of lagoons is an adventure on light tackle. Furthermore, there are another five species of unique fish which will readily take the fly. One day of fishing here can yield a host of different experiences.
The lodge offers comfortable air-conditioned chalets in front of Thaimacu Falls and a range of wildlife surrounds the individual villas. For birdwatchers, colours across the spectrum flit between the flowering shrubs in front of the lodge. Contrary to popular opinion, the bug life of the Amazon only comes out after dark and, with screens on all chalets and the main dining room, nuisance is kept to a bare minimum. The cuisine is Brazilian in style with a variety of the day’s catch available alongside the more traditional. There is also an outcamp on the Cururu river some 40 kms by four wheel drive vehicle from the lodge. Here the river is fast flowing and gin clear, with overhung rainforest draping down to the water. Giant otters are regularly seen playing in the pools. To experience this camp so close to the living jungle, is to really experience the rainforest at its wildest.
With good boats and knowledgeable guides, hundreds of miles of water to choose from, the greatest range of species to target and scenery straight out of a nature exclusive, Brazil and Thaimacu Falls Lodge is a must for the fisherman seeking a new thrill.
